The rumors and speculation were correct! It's official.
The rumors were true! At its event in Korea, Blizzard just officially announced StarCraft 2, showed a trailer and played the game live. Here's what we know so far:
While there are still some big questions to be answered as the presentation continues -- when is it shipping, has the units per player at one time been increased, what do the Protoss eat -- Blizzard is slowly removing the shroud of mystery. A big announcement (what, StarCraft 2 wasn't enough?) is that Dustin Browder is the project's lead designer. Relax if you haven't heard of him before, game developers aren't household names like movie stars. Browder has plenty of experience, having worked on Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth, Dark Reign 2 The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II.
Browder joined Blizzard's employ back in 2005, and we haven't heard much from him since. Given his extensive background developing RTS titles, Browder does stand out as a good choice. Though, it is odd that potentially two years into the development of StarCraft 2 he's calling the footage shown off in Korea "early code." Still, the footage he showed off included a FMV sequence of a regular Terran being put into his combat gear. A fitting metaphor for Blizzard gearing up for their return to the RTS genre.
